Q. I usually claim an exemption from my CLE hours. Do I need to take any action at this time?

A. No. You may disregard the compliance summary. Exemptions are only claimed on the Annual    Report Form that will be available online in late January of 2020.

Q. How do I determine the hours needed for 2019?

A. Review the “Additional Needed for 2019” line in the Compliance Summary of your personal CLE record.

Q. How do I report changes to my CLE record?

A. Send an email to CLECompliance@ncbar.gov describing the changes needed. Please attach certificates of completion for courses not on your record.

Q. I was licensed to practice in 2019. Do I have CLE obligations this year?

A. Newly licensed attorneys must complete the Professionalism for New Attorneys (PNA) program in the first year they are required to complete CLE. Attorneys admitted prior to July 1, 2019, must complete the PNA program this year. Attorneys licensed on or after July 1, 2019, have until December 31, 2020, to complete the course.

Q. I am newly admitted to North Carolina, but I have practiced law in another state for five or more years. Do I need to complete the PNA program?

A. No. You are exempt from the requirement. All exemptions can be claimed on the 2019 Annual Report Form that will be available to file online in late January of 2020.
